The Defence of Sotha unfolded upon a quiet frontier world of Ultramar, a place made suddenly vital by the ancient xenos device buried beneath its greatest mountain. The Pharos, a beacon of alien origin, could pierce the warp storms that strangled the galaxy, and so Sotha became a lifeline of light amid the Heresy's darkness.

The Ultramarines and their kin among the Space Marines garrisoned the world, understanding that whoever commanded the Pharos commanded a measure of clarity in a blinded age. Guilliman had raised the fledgling realm of Imperium Secundus in part upon the promise of that light, and Sotha was its silent cornerstone.
