Heavy Bolter

The heavy bolter is a crew-served support weapon that magnifies the principle of the bolter into a withering hail of fire. Where a standard boltgun fires single self-propelled shells, the heavy bolter spits them in a thunderous stream, each fist-sized round tearing into its target before detonating deep within. A sustained burst can scythe down massed infantry, strip light vehicles, and stagger monstrous creatures, making it one of the mainstay heavy weapons of the Imperium's armies.

Because of its weight and punishing recoil, the heavy bolter is typically mounted on a tripod, carried by superhuman warriors, or bolted to vehicles, gun emplacements, and fortifications. The Space Marines wield man-portable versions as squad support arms, while the massed regiments of the Astra Militarum rely on them to anchor firing lines and hold defensive positions against overwhelming numbers.

Countless patterns exist across the galaxy, differing in ammunition feed, barrel arrangement, and rate of fire, and many are ancient machines maintained through solemn ritual. Whether hammering from a bunker's firing slit or roaring from the sponson of a tank, the heavy bolter is a familiar and dreaded sound on the battlefields of the 41st millennium, the drumbeat of Imperial firepower.
