The Iconward is among the most trusted of all a cult's acolyte hybrids, chosen for the sacred duty of carrying the brood's holy standard into the heart of the uprising. Part priest and part battle-standard bearer, the Iconward hoists the totem of the cult high above the anarchy of the insurrection, and the mere sight of it sends the faithful surging forward in a wave of indiscriminate, ecstatic violence.
The standard itself is a reliquary of the brood's alien god. Lashed to its pole are chitinous blades grown from splinters of the Patriarch's own hardened exoskeleton, holy relics said to resonate with its divine power, while vials of pheromonal secretions drawn from the cult-father hang alongside them. The scent of these sacred oils works upon Iconward and cultist alike, filling them with a transcendent euphoria that deadens their nerves to pain, fear and mortal trauma.
This makes the Iconward far more than a mere flag-carrier. Its totem is a galvanising presence on the battlefield, at once a rallying point and a proclamation of conquest, and its raising can turn the very tide of a battle; more than one uprising has been won for no greater reason than that an Iconward lifted the standard high at the decisive moment. Around it the broodkin fight with redoubled devotion, flinging themselves upon the enemy without a thought for their own survival.
Some Iconwards bear relics of truly ancient pedigree, standards such as the Icon of the Cult Ascendant, cast in blood-blessed platinum and steeped for centuries in the psychic emanations of the Broodmind, having hung behind the Great Patriarch's throne until the appointed time. To be given such a relic is the highest honour a cult can bestow, and the Iconward who carries it becomes the living embodiment of the brood's faith made manifest, the beacon around which the whole insurrection turns.
